According to a 15th-century legend, Hy-Brasil island could be found to the west of Ireland to the north of the Fortunate Islands in Greek mythology. Revisiting this ancient myth, Vision of Paradise examines the relationship between the imaginary and the tangible, pondering on today’s technological possibilities, ambitions and their capacity to expand our horizons. Advancements in virtual reality and sophisticated computer simulations allow us to push the boundaries of the physical reality we know and recognize. A parallel therefore emerges between the goals of virtual engineering and those of 15th-century exploration and colonization, pointing to an age-old desire for discovery and its consequences. (AJL)
