National Short and Medium-Length Competition

Holiday Native Land Nicolas Renaud, Brian Virostek

Holiday Native Land is an artistic and political lesson in history and montage, based on images and sounds from sponsored films produced between 1920 and 1970 to promote outdoor vacations in Canada. Two shots coexist in split screen and develop a dialogue that is both powerful and subtle. Multidisciplinary artist and teacher Nicolas Renaud, a member of the Huron-Wendat First Nation of Wendake, and Brian Virostek, experimental filmmaker, performer and archivist at Library and Archives Canada, turn the content of these advertisements against themselves. Beneath the veneer of innocent, happy vacation images lies a desire to dominate nature and Indigenous peoples. With sharp wit, this film articulates an interpretation of the colonial imagination in which the violence of the archives resonates with the present. Warning: The archival films contain outdated representations and inappropriate language concerning First Nations peoples. (HSB)
