Ever Since, I Have Been Flying Aylin Gökmen

Depuis, Je Vole

A man’s voice cedes to naively written intertitles, then to overexposed pastel images of nameless figures, water, forests, and nature. Halfway through, unmoving and close-up, the narrator’s face appears: a 60-year-old Kurdish man who grew up in a nomadic community in the mountains of southwest Turkey. His narration before this reveal centred around stories of his youth, days spent with his mother and bittersweet memories of his first love. When his recollections become more painful and violent, he appears on screen in a dark and sinister space where, staring straight at the viewer, he recounts a traumatic experience. Despite the gravity of his words, he is imbued with a deep serenity, reflected in the strangely peaceful images surrounding this difficult confession. (AJL)
