Original or not, comparisons are often drawn between the camera and the human eye. By filming and framing a situation in a certain way, the filmmaker shares their own perspective while keeping room for the viewer’s interpretation. In Onlookers, Kim Takesue collects snapshots of the comings and goings of tourists in Laos. She films them interacting with other tourists and locals without ever picking up their precise words, allowing the static shot to guide the viewers’ judgment. Postcolonial issues, already evoked by the film’s subject matter, are highlighted by the emphasis on our role as onlookers. (AJL)
