Combining her mother’s voiceover testimony with archival super-8 images, filmmaker Courtney Stephens takes us back to the memory of an illegal abortion in Mexico City in the 60s. With the threat of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision being overturned in the US over the past few years, this highly personal and poignant short film reminds us that those dark days, when women had no legal protection around abortion, are not distant. Despite the profound intimacy of Stephens’ format and approach, Lesser Choices is above all, a work that explores an issue that is startlingly universal and timeless. (MAS)
