Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project Joe Brewster, Michèle Stephenson

Nikki Giovanni, one of the most influential African-American voices of the century, is the focus of this profound biographical film that features her indelible contribution to the fight for social justice and equity. A poet, activist and, above all, a major inspiration for Black women past and present, Giovanni—with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face—gives a vibrant account of the highlights of her career and generously shares glimpses into her daily life. Skillfully directed by filmmakers Michèle Stephenson and Joe Brewster, this film places archival footage of past events alongside scenes from today. The result is a tribute to Giovanni as a force of nature who continues to evoke emotion and surprise with her disarming candor. (MAS)
