Nafura
Three friends wander a Saudi Arabian city at night. The features of their anonymous faces are concealed by patches of dazzling light. Starting from reflections on the symbolism of the Jeddah fountain, said to be the highest in the world, they converse excitedly, lighthearted yet rebellious, defying conventions, and work into their dialogues the mysterious word “nafura.” Their nocturnal walk and lyrical games are cut with staged elements that blur the lines between the imaginary and the candidly documented. Nafura is a manifesto for emancipation in all its forms—whether individual, political, artistic, or linguistic. (AJL)
