Having already taken an intimate look at the complex relationship with motherhood in her short film No Star (RIDM 2022), Tana Gilbert turns her attention to the "unloved", as the title of Malqueridas suggests. The film compiles videos and photos captured clandestinely by incarcerated mothers, who suffer a separation as inevitable as it is heartbreaking when their babies reach the age of two. Buoyed by the hope of reunion, they continue to serve their sentences while supporting each other. Malqueridas gives voice to the resilient Karina Sánchez, who shares her heartbreaking story by documenting the script for this work created in collaboration with the inmates. Pixelated images and lullabies lend the film a dreamlike, abstract dimension, creating a striking contrast with the brutal reality experienced by these women, condemned to oblivion behind prison walls.
