Spanish filmmaker Pablo Lago Dantas returns to the rural Galician village he left at the age of 18. Two decades later, the village remains frozen in time, deeply anchored in local customs. A search for belonging is behind his return to his roots as the picturesque family home is enveloped in a thick fog mingled with the alcoholic vapours of aguardiente home-brew. And yet, the strength of family bonds finds its match in the generational clash between a grandson seeking to understand this world and a grandmother who cannot grasp the visceral need to leave and discover another reality. This duality of desires is sharpened in the film by artful shots that, like splendid baroque paintings, play on the contrast between light and dark. (AAM)
