Panorama - The State of the World

WaaPaKe (Demain) Jules Arita Koostachin

WaaPaKe (Demain)

Indigenous residential schools cost the lives of thousands of children and deprived survivors of their identity. Creating a safe space, director Jules Arita Koostachin meets the survivors she knows, to shed a light on all those whom the authorities tried to erase and to help tend to the wounds of this horrifying chapter of North American colonial history. Over images and immersive music, the voices of a mother, a son, and friends unite in an attempt to understand and deconstruct the repercussions of this intergenerational trauma. Together, they confront the pain and anger tied to the loss of traditions and languages, while seeking new ways to continue the healing and reconnecting with their ancestors, community, and culture.
