Panorama - Against the Grain

The Oceans are the Real Continents Tommaso Santambrogio

In a peaceful Cuban village, time seems to stand still, life measured out in goodbyes. This magnificent, deeply poetic mosaic of a film explores how departures impact the lives of individuals across three generations. An elderly lady living alone spends her days re-reading letters from the past, immersed in memories of those who are gone. A pair of young artists try to savour their time together, every precious moment tinged with a sweet sadness, before their approaching separation throws their future up in the air. Between fantasies and laughter, two children share the dream of a future in the US, while the family of one of them prepares to emigrate. Avoiding any sweeping political judgment on the complex reality of life in Cuba, director Tommaso Santambrogio captures the heartache that haunts residents as they dream of leaving. (AAM)
