Éloge de l'ombre
In this deeply poetic documentary essay, director Catherine Martin explores three aspects of the vast subject of darkness. Interwoven with the aesthetic reflections of author Jun'ichir? Tanizaki, Éloge de l’ombre begins by considering Japan’s unique relationship with darkness. Through the work of artisans and the stillness of empty spaces, we discover a world in which shadows are celebrated rather than feared. The leitmotif of creation becomes a pretext for questioning the place of darkness in visual art and cinema through encounters with artists who look into the dark and find glimmers of light. (SC)
