German filmmaker Daniel Kötter sets his camera on the borders of eastern Armenia, impressively portraying the human geography that dictates the psyche of Armenians living in these mountainous plains. With the memories of the destructive 2020 Karabakh war still heavy in the air and checkpoints flanking the Sotk gold mine, one of the few viable economic resources, now occupied by Azerbaijan, a military presence is palpable on these bucolic hills. Picturesque and contemplative, Landshaft masterfully looks through the prism of the landscape at how conflicting wars fuelled by regional ethno-nationalist politics have turned a once co-habited territory into a place where the threat of a looming war is the only constant.
