The earth trembles on this photographic emulsion. The horizon multiplies, the moon transforms into a blazing sun, and mountains slide. The blinking landscape dazzles me: celestial and terrestrial bodies rearrange themselves before my eyes. Between intuition and precision, Manela Szlam’s practice—manifested in the triptych of Lunar Almanac, Altiplano, and Merapi—captures space through the body (and the) camera to convey the unseen vibrations hidden in its folds. I have always been drawn to film’s ability to exist between the visible and the invisible. These three pieces catapult me into a universe in which film techniques reveal hidden worlds, until now accessible only through extrasensory perception. (NO)
