Lea Glob’s film Apolonia, Apolonia which won best International Feature at IDFA, is no small feat. Over a decade, the Danish filmmaker captures her burgeoning friendship with defiant artist Apolonia Sokol behind an unbridled but empathetic camera lens. Through this organic and unfiltered approach to storytelling, we are immediately pulled within the intimate walls of the charismatic painter’s unique world and witness the societal biases she overcomes while carving out her artistic identity. Considered by some to be a leading figure in contemporary French figurative painting, Apolonia’s pure creative force beams through as Glob channels moments of her vulnerability and resilience with requited authenticity and unflinching patience.
